Research Interests: Dr. Kato’s research interest includes examining the origin of organization, i.e., why and how organizations emerge. Currently, Shoko studies entrepreneurs’ behavioral strategies during organization emergence—how entrepreneurs persevere in the startup processes. Shoko is particularly interested in utilizing unique data sources in order to conduct process research. Examples of this are her current projects that use social media (blogs, Twitter, Facebook) as well as diary methods. Before pursuing an academic career, Shoko served as a senior program officer at the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which executes Japanese Government’s international development programs. This working experience led her to pursue research in the areas such as social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship in developing countries.
