Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Faculty Policies

Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Faculty Appointment, Review,
Re-Appointment, and Promotion

Introduction

Non-Tenure Track (NTT) faculty fill critical roles in the teaching, research, and engagement areas with the mission of the Rutgers School of Business-Camden (RSBC). NTT faculty are essential to meeting programmatic needs within departments and providing specialized professional or research expertise that complements the efforts and qualifications of the tenured and tenure-track faculty. They are contributing members of the academic community who are engaged in pedagogical innovation and scholarship, mentor students, and serve on department, school, and university committees, as appropriate.

For appointments, reappointments, and promotions, faculty members are evaluated based on the three criteria of teaching, scholarship, and service as might be relevant to their role and title. For NTT faculty, the weighting of these criteria depends on the title series and focus of the particular appointment.

NTT Appointments

Appointments of NTT faculty may be for a term ranging from one year to up to seven years, except grant-funded faculty appointments may be for a term of six months to five years. As of July 1, 2018, an individual who has served in a full-time Non-Tenure Track title for at least six years within an eight-year period, if reappointed thereafter, shall receive appointments of not less than three years. This three-year minimum appointment does not apply to grant-funded non-tenure track faculty. There is no limit to the number of non-tenure track faculty appointments an individual may receive, except for those faculty in a Lecturer title.

All NTT faculty receive renewable contracts, contingent upon successful reappointment, with the exception of faculty in the Lecturer title, who shall be offered non-renewable contracts.

The School of Business–Camden currently uses the following two NTT title series:
Professional Practice
Instructor of Professional Practice
Assistant Professor of Professional Practice
Associate Professor of Professional Practice
Professor of Professional Practice

Teaching
Instructor of Teaching
Assistant Professor of Teaching
Associate Professor of Teaching
Professor of Teaching

NTT Re-Appointment

NTT reappointment is subject to a continuing need for the position, adequate funding for the position, and a positive formal evaluation. Rutgers Policy 60.5.12 sets out the notice requirements for faculty holding renewable appointments. Per Policy 60.5.12, faculty holding appointments of one year or more must be given notice of non-reappointment, or of intention not to recommend reappointment as follows: four months prior to the expiration of the first year of academic service; seven months prior to the expiration of the second year of academic service; not later than twelve months in advance of the termination of the appointment in all other cases. If notice is not timely given, the contract will automatically be extended for a six month period. NTT faculty in grant-funded positions may be released prior to the end of the term if grant funding ends or is reduced during the term of the appointment. Under such circumstances, the notice and six-month extension requirements are not applicable.

The re-appointment process is designated by the Dean to the appropriate Area Head. As appropriate, the Area Head will convene a committee for re-appointment review. The recommendation resulting from the review is sent to the Dean for final review and decision.

Evaluation of Non-Tenure Track Faculty (notwithstanding reappointment or promotion)
The following minimum standards apply to the frequency of the evaluation of non-tenure track faculty members:

  1. During the term of a one or two-year appointment, NTT faculty shall be evaluated at least once.
  2. During the term of a three, four, or five-year appointment, NTT faculty shall be evaluated at least twice.
  3. During the term of a six or seven-year appointment, NTT faculty shall be evaluated at least three times.

In all cases, the evaluation done for reappointment must take place in enough time to comply with the notice requirements pursuant to Rutgers Policy 60.5.12. NTT faculty shall be provided with written evaluations of their performance as appropriate.

NTT Promotion

Non-Tenure Track faculty with six consecutive years of full-time service in the same rank shall be considered for promotion to the next higher rank, if requested. All other requests from Non-Tenure Track faculty members to be considered for promotion may be granted at the department’s or unit’s consideration.

Consideration for promotion in rank includes preparation of required materials using the existing university formats. The suggested and preferred method to generate Non-Tenure Track promotion forms is by completing your Faculty Survey online at https://oirap.rutgers.edu/facsurv/.

Promotion to Assistant Professor
For promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor, the department is responsible for completing the evaluation form (Short Form). Evaluation is done by the department head, dean, or designee(s). Alternatively, units may require candidates to complete the Recommendation Information Form (NTT 1). Follow the procedures specified in the Academic Promotion instructions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty at the University Labor Relations website at this link:  https://laborrelations.rutgers.edu/faculty/non-tenure-track-faculty-non-libraries

Promotion to Associate Professor or Higher
For promotion consideration to Associate Professor or higher, at a minimum, form NTT 1 is to be completed. Follow the procedures specified in the Academic Promotion instructions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty at the University Labor Relations website at this link: https://laborrelations.rutgers.edu/faculty/non-tenure-track-faculty-non-libraries

Signatures

If I am chosen and matched with an executive, I will follow through and prepare a one-page report giving honest feedback about the experience. The written summary is due by the start of the next semester. By typing my name in the box to the right I am offering my digital signature in lieu of my handwritten signature.

After the shadowing event, I will write a personal thank you letter to the executive and copy Dr. Kaufman-Scarborough and Ms. Bridget Britton for their records. By typing my name in the box to the right I am offering my digital signature in lieu of my handwritten signature.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

After notified of a match, students are responsible for providing personal information to the matched executive (e.g., current resume and cover letter with information on career ambitions). The information on this application is for internal use only, for us to match you as well as possible with and executive from among our alumni database.

BLDP Application

The Spring 2023 Application is now open!

Priority will be given to applications received by November 18. Applications are accepted until all seats are filled. Space is limited, so apply early!

The seminar application process is our gateway for entry into the program. Upon acceptance into BLDP, students will be emailed their acceptance letter plus a special permission number allowing registration for the BLDP seminar.

Requirements

Seminar applications are solicited each semester and require the following:

  1. Completed application form (at the bottom of this page),
  2. For students with GPA 3.0 – 3.49, two (2) letters of recommendation (one academic; one other)

Rutgers-Camden students are invited to apply to apply for enrollment in the BLDP seminar. All applicants are expected to meet both of the following selection criteria:  (1) have sophomore standing or above and (2) have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above. First-semester transfer students will be evaluated based on their GPA earned at Rutgers. Students who fail to meet these admission criteria may still be allowed to apply for (and possibly enroll in) the BLDP seminar, but they will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The director balances evaluations to make final decisions on people accepted for the seminar (up to a maximum of 15-20 each semester).

Students who are admitted to the BDLP are required to adopt the BLDP Code of Conduct. A signed contract is required from each student.

Students may count activities toward “leadership units” that were initiated prior to taking a seminar, as long as those activities occured primarily during their enrollment in their academic program.

Application for Admission to BLDP Seminar

Applications for the BLDP Seminar will be ongoing until class is filled.
